2 People Die in 2 Central Mass Accidents

Charbel Mouawad, 21, of Hudson was killed in a motorcycle accident Saturday night around 10:00pm when he somehow lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a building on Main Street in Hudson. Mouawad was rushed to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his severe injuries. Police are continuing to investigate the fatal accident but have reported that Mouawad was riding his cycle in the building’s parking lot when he accelerated, traveled about 300 feet and collided with the building. Nashua Blue Printing and a real estate agency are located within the building that Mouawad struck.

A second deadly crash involving a single vehicle occurred in Westminster Sunday morning just after 2:00am and claimed the life of driver Theodore Hietala, 22. Hietala was reportedly driving on South Ashburnham Road when he crashed his vehicle. Officials involved with the accident have not released how the crash occurred and the investigation is ongoing into the cause of the deadly accident.

Our thoughts go out to the Mouawad and Hietala familes at this difficult time.

Karen Youngblood, 47, of Lowell suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon around 2:30pm when she was hit by a pickup truck while trying to change one of her tires in the breakdown lane near Exit 47 in Methuen on 495 South.  The Eagle Tribune reported today that Youngblood remains in a Boston hospital for treatment of serious injuries

Mike Belisle, 29, of North Andover was identified as the operator of the Ford pickup that struck Youngblood on the side of the highway.  Belisle was reportedly going to a landscaping job with his co-worker when a vehicle in front of him in the right travel lane slammed on the brakes, which resulted in Belisle doing the same and striking Youngblood with his truck.  Belisle reportedly cooperated with Massachusetts State Police at the scene of the accident.  The investigation is continuing into the exact cause of how Youngblood was struck.

Runaway BMW Injures Woman on Beacon Hill

An unattended vehicle struck and seriously injured a 45-year-old woman in the Beacon Hill neighborhood yesterday afternoon.

According to Boston police, the BMW was apparently double-parked and left in neutral when it began rolling backward and pinning a woman to the ground on Mt. Vernon Street at about 3:15 p.m.

The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was in a guarded condition late last night, The Boston Globe reported.

According to a Boston Fire Department spokesman, construction workers first responded to the scene and tried to lift the car with a jack when firefighters arrived and moved the vehicle.

The owner of the vehicle is not yet named.

Liability Issues and Seeking Legal Help

Since the unattended vehicle was left in neutral, the owner may be held accountable for the injuries inflicted on the 45-year-old victim.

Until further details regarding this accident are known, we can only offer our wishes for a speedy recovery to the victim in this accident and hope that the negligent BMW owner is soon discovered.

Four Injured in I-93 Bus Accident

According to The Boston Globe, a bus accident on I-93 North this past Sunday evening left 4 people injured. The accident occurred near the Stoneham line on the highway when a 22-year-old Boston woman operating an SUV veered from the right lane into the middle lane, hitting a passenger bus, which in turn struck a sedan.

The Boston woman was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. The bus driver was transported to a local hospital as well for treatment. The unidentified man and woman in the sedan, both 31, were also taken to an area hospital for treatment. A 6-year-old girl was a passenger in the sedan but was uninjured in the crash. The 53 passengers on the bus that was hit were not injured. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the multi-vehicle crash and if any charges will be brought against the driver of the SUV.

Bus Crash Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 250 crashes involving buses in 2008 across the U.S. resulted in fatalities. Occupants of large passenger buses can experience a range of injuries, including strains, broken bones, cuts and bruising, and traumatic head and brain injuries. Buses do not usually install seat belts or similar safety restraints, which can put passengers at a higher risk of getting injured in the event of a crash. Thankfully, this accident did not result in more serious injuries for those involved.

Impaired Driving Simulators for Plaistow Students

An article out in The Eagle Tribune this week highlighted the dangers of drunk driving by speaking with Timberlane Regional High School students from Plaistow, NH who took part in a driving simulator program at the school. The virtual program gave students the opportunity to see how they would drive if they were under the influence of alcohol or texting. The Timberlane students were the very first in New Hampshire to test out the Injury Prevention program’s brand-new federally funded simulators.

The simulators , which come complete with a steering wheel , pedals and a monitor, gave students the chance to see how just one wrong decision can put them and others in serious danger if they are impaired by drugs or alcohol or otherwise distracted. The program was tested in time for the very busy prom and graduation season and gives students the effects of distracted driving or drinking. Reaction time is significantly decreased and the steering locks up to simulate the effects of impaired driving. In the simulator program, a student can get pulled over by an officer, given a sobriety test and can also experience what jail is like as well as a court hearing.

Administrators at the school say that this will give students an accurate depiction of what would happen were they to drive drunk or distracted while out on the roads.

Amesbury Woman Charged in Fatal DUI Crash

Nicole Parziale, 39, of Amesbury has been charged in an alleged drunk driving crash that claimed the life of one of her passengers, 55-year-old Glenn Robichaud of Bedford. The Boston Globe reports that the fatal crash took place this past Saturday night around 10:30pm on the northbound side of I-95 in Burlington, in the area of Exit 32.

Parziale is reported to have swerved her Pontiac Grand Am across the highway and ended up in front of a car operated by 20-year-old Kayla Trenholm of Hope Valley, Rhode Island. Trenholm reportedly then crashed with the side of Parziale’s car and both vehicles lost control and crashed.

Trenholm and her passenger, 19-year-old David Torrey of Shannock, Rhode Island, were taken to an area hospital for minor injuries. Parziale, Robichaud, and a second passenger, Denis Splaine, 53, were rushed to another local hospital for treatment. It was announced later that Robichaud died while at the hospital from his serious injuries.

Authorities charged Parziale with negligent operation of her vehicle, operating under the influence of liquor, and also for a suspended license. Parziale reportedly has been convicted for drunken driving before. She was arraigned on the charges yesterday in Woburn District Court. Police have stated that they could be charging Parziale with motor vehicle homicide as well for Robichaud’s death.

Statistics on Drunken Driving in the U.S
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has reported that 1 person dies every 50 minutes from injuries in a drunken driving crash in the U.S. Additionally, it is estimated that 1 in 3 people will become involved in a crash during their lifetime where alcohol played a contributing factor in the crash. Drunk driving makes up 1/3 of all deadly crashes that occur in the U.S. each year.

The Eagle Tribune reports that 2 of the individuals involved in the multi-vehicle crash suffered injuries as a result of the crash, but the injuries were not life-threatening.

Van Accident Injuries Can Be Devastating

Injuries sustained in a van collision can be devastating and can result in survivors becoming permanently disabled in some instances. Both back and neck aches and pains can oftentimes lead to lifelong conditions. Headaches and countless other pains may also completely change the life of an individual who is involved in a van accident.

How Safe are Vans?
Approximately every 13 minutes in the U.S., an individual tragically dies from injuries stemming from a motor vehicle crash. Despite the comprehensive safety testing that goes into each and every vehicle before it’s approved to be on the market, there unfortunately is no warranty that a driver will not be involved in an accident during their lifetime. In some accident scenarios, a driver may not even have had the option of preventing a van accident.

There are a great number of factors that can potentially cause a van accident. Some contributing factors may be a drunk driver who swerves into the opposite lane of travel or a vehicle losing control due to slippery road conditions. Due to their design features, vans are more difficult to drive than other vehicles in certain weather conditions, such as when it’s windy, snowy, or icy. Vans also face a higher risk of rolling over in an accident than other motor vehicles.

After a Van Collision
Roughly 3 million drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are injured in vehicle collisions each year around the country. An individual who has been severely injured in a van crash may be able to receive compensation for:
  • Rehabilitative treatment, such as physical therapy
  • Medical costs
  • Damage to one’s property
  • Wages that were lost from a job, due to missing work following the crash
  • Assorted personal injury claims that an injured party may be able to pursue

Widow of Man Killed in Tunnel Crash Sues Big Dig Contractors

The widow of Brian Hicks, a 39-year-old Salem man who died in a horrific tunnel accident in Boston has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against eight Big Dig contractors.

Hicks’ accident occurred on March 27 in a connector tunnel between the Sumner Tunnel and Storrow Drive in Boston. Hicks had lost control of his pickup truck when he struck a Jersey barrier inside the tunnel, and was ejected from the vehicle.
He became entangled in the razor-sharp handrails, which contributed to his death.
Hicks, a married father of one, is the eighth person to die on what some have dubbed the "Ginsu guardrails," news reports said.

Details of the Wrongful Death Lawsuit

His widow, Donna, is suing the contractors over the design of the handrails. She filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Monday in Suffolk Superior Court, alleging that the eight Big Dig contractors knew the design of the railings was inherently dangerous but have failed to take any action to address the problem despite the deaths.

The lawsuit seeks just under $2 million in actual damages plus additional damages to be determined by a jury.

The names of the Big Dig contractors named in the lawsuit are:

  • Bechtel Corp.,
  • Parsons Brinckerhoff Americas,
  • Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff,
  • GMT Architects Inc.,
  • Tuttle Aluminum and Bronze Inc.,
  • McCourt Construction Co. Inc.,
  • Obayaski Corp., and
  • McCourt/Obayaski.

The railings, and the attached concrete barriers, were installed to protect workers walking along the sides of the tunnel, but have since been involved in a series of fatal Big Dig accidents, one involving a state trooper on a motorcycle. The trooper’s widow won a $9 million settlement last fall from the state and the same Big Dig contractors being sued by Hicks.

Marshfield Fuel Truck Crash Claims Life of Unidentified Driver

An unidentified driver was killed this past Saturday evening around 6:00pm in a head-on crash on Plain Street in Marshfield. The driver who was killed was operating a sedan when it collided with a fuel truck on the roadway. There was reportedly extensive damage to the driver’s side area of the sedan. Officials reportedly took over 30 minutes in removing the trapped driver from the sedan. Police are continuing to investigate the accident and to search for exactly what happened that caused this tragic crash.

Causes of Head-On Collisions
According to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, a head-on accident can result from a driver’s unintentional or intentional actions. For example, an intentional action would be a driver attempting to pass the car in front of him, only to make impact with an approaching car in the oncoming lane of traffic. An example of an unintentional action may be the driver falling asleep behind the wheel or becoming distracted by his or her cell phone ringing and then straying into the opposite lane of oncoming traffic. There may also be contributing factors present, such as alcohol or excessive speed. Most head-on crashes occur from the unintentional actions of a driver.
