Bicyclist Injured in SUV Crash in Wayland

An unnamed Wayland bicyclist was seriously injured yesterday morning about 8 a.m. after he crashed into an SUV on Route 20 in Wayland, police said.

The injured bicyclist was flown by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center. According to the authorities, the injuries the bicyclist suffered in the crash are not considered life-threatening.

The SUV driver was not injured, though the vehicle sustained damage on the passenger side door.

The bicycle-SUV collision occurred at the intersection of Route 20 and Glen Road.

Safety Tips for Preventing Bicycle Accidents

A National Center for Statistics and Analysis report suggests the following safety tips for avoiding bicycle accidents:

  • ALWAYS wear helmets. Helmets are essential to protecting the head from traumatic injury.
  • OBEY traffic rules. Bicyclists are required to obey the same traffic rules as other drivers.
  • KEEP your distance from other vehicles. Drivers should allow bicyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing them and should yield to bicyclists at intersections and as directed by traffic signs and signals.
  • MAKE sure you are seen on the road. Bicyclists should wear fluorescent or brightly colored clothing to increase their visibility. At night, a front light and red reflector or flashing rear light should be used.

Deadly Car Crashes This Week Kill 2

Two individuals were killed in two different motor vehicle crashes in Massachusetts this week, as reported by officials who are involved with the fatal accidents.

Motor Vehicle Homicide Charges for Driver in Fatal 1-93 Crash
Cristian Hernandez-Giron, 32, of Central Falls, Rhode Island died from his injuries in a car accident late Monday afternoon on I-93 South in Wilmington. Hernandez-Giron was a passenger in a box truck operated by Luis Gasparico, 25, of Providence, Rhode Island.

The Boston Globe reports that Gasparico was driving on the highway just after 5:00pm when a van driven by Greg Galanopoulos, 49, of Medford veered from the left travel lane into Gasparico’s truck, causing the truck to roll over before it came to a rest in the median.

State police report that Hernandez-Giron and Gasparico were both trapped in the truck while waiting for first responders to arrive on the accident scene.

Hernandez-Giron was declared dead at an area hospital in Burlington, while Gasparico was discharged from the same hospital some time later.

Galanopoulos was operating a van that is owned by a Somerville painting company. There were two passengers in the van, identified as Andreas Matidis, 55, of Malden and Ronald Ramirez-Guzman, 28, of Chelsea.

Matidis sustained minor injuries in the collision, while Galanopoulos and Ramirez-Guzman were not injured.

Massachusetts State Police report that Galanopoulos faces charges of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, driving without a license, and additionally faces citations for speeding and marked lanes violations.

Drunk Driver Kills Pedestrian in Burlington
The second accident this week resulted in the death of Daniel Jalbert, 51, of Burlington who was walking at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Olympian Way in Burlington Sunday evening when he was hit by a drunk driver.

Anthony Manfredi, 48, of Dracut was reportedly driving drunk when he hit Jalbert around 8:00pm that evening.

The Boston Globe reports that Jalbert was immediately rushed to an area hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

According to The Globe, Manfredi is currently being held on $5,000 bail for a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol in relation to the fatal crash. Police have not announced yet if Manfredi will face additional charges following Jalbert’s death.

Manfredi is due back in court for a pretrial hearing in early September.

Authorities are continuing to investigate both of these tragic accidents.

There were no details on their conditions.

The driver of the truck towing a 2007 Case backhoe on a trailer, Jeffrey Fisher, 49, of Coventry, R.I., was not injured.

Lessons Drivers Can Learn from Recent Car Crashes in Massachusetts

Unfortunately, we hear about car accidents every day when we watch the news or pick up a paper. There have been a few collisions over the past weeks that serve as reminders to the rest of us who are out on the roadways.

Yarmouth Teen Drives Into 183-Year-Old Building
Raphael Johnson, 18, of Yarmouth dozed off while driving last Wednesday morning and ended up crashing into Hallet’s Store on Route 6A in Yarmouth. The accident occurred around 4:00am, after Johnson reportedly kept falling asleep on his ride home behind the wheel of his Volkswagen Jetta.

According to The Boston Globe, Johnson has been charged by police with negligently operating a motor vehicle and failing to stay within a marked lane, due to his driver fatigue. He emerged from the collision without any injuries, thankfully, but the historic building has been damaged.

The lessons to keep in mind with this accident are:

  • Never Drive While Tired
  • If You Are Falling Asleep Behind the Wheel, Pull Over and Rest

Toyota Driver Hurt in Route 125 Crash
Seacoast Online reports that an unidentified male driver was seriously injured when he attempted to pass another vehicle while travelling on Route 125 last Wednesday afternoon in Lee, New Hampshire.

The unnamed man was driving a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser and tried to go around another vehicle, but collided with a truck that was travelling in the opposite direction. The unknown male was airlifted to a Boston hospital for medical treatment of serious injuries from the head-on collision.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have not stated if excessive speed or alcohol were contributing factors.

The lesson to take away from this crash is:
  • Only Pass Another Vehicle When You Have a Clear View of the Opposite Lane of Travel on a Split Lane Roadway

Skateboarder Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver in Taunton
Nicholas Silva-Thomas, 17, of Taunton was skateboarding when he was struck and killed last Thursday night by a hit-and-run driver near Watson Pond just before 10:00pm. The driver reportedly left the scene of the accident after hitting the teenager and drove north on Bay Street.

The Raynham Call reports that Silva-Thomas was transported to an area hospital, where he died. Officials are continuing to investigate the teen’s death and are pursuing charges against the driver.

Attorney Kiley is very proud to be a part of the Hit-And-Run Reward Program. This program is set up for witnesses to hit-and-run accidents and allows them to call and report details on what they saw, while remaining anonymous and receiving a reward for their help.

Lessons to learn from this tragedy are:
  • Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings While Driving
  • Remember: Bicyclists, Motorcyclists, Pedestrians and Skateboarders Also Use the Same Roadways You Do While Driving – Pay Attention!
  • Accidents Happen: Do NOT Drive Away After Any Type of Accident, Especially When You Have Hit Someone. Pull Over and Call 911 Immediately

Girl Suffers Serious Leg Injury in Multi-Vehicle Crash

An unidentified girl sustained a severe leg injury in a multi-vehicle accident that involved a total of 3 cars and a school bus last Friday afternoon just before 4:00pm on Route 2 in Lincoln.

The girl who suffered the serious lower leg injury was a passenger in an SUV that was involved in the crash. There is no additional information on her condition at this time. Besides the young girl, five other individuals sustained injuries that were determined to be minor in nature.

The collision occurred when an unidentified driver of a pickup truck veered into the right lane of the roadway in the area of Bedford Road and subsequently hit the SUV.

The SUV then collided with a bus that was transporting campers from Fenn School. The chain reaction crash then resulted in the bus colliding with another vehicle.

According to The Boston Globe, there were 9 campers on the bus at the time of the collision and all 9 were reportedly uninjured following the crash but were taken to an area hospital as a precaution. Two adults on the bus were transported to the hospital as well.

Authorities have reported that the multi-vehicle accident continues to be under investigation.

Car Accident Statistics
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 168,000 children under the age of 14 suffered injuries in car accidents across the U.S in 2008. The CDC has reported that motor vehicle accident injuries among young children are oftentimes caused by incorrect positioning of a child safety seat or are due to a child not being restrained at all. If children were secured in the correct size and type of safety seat, the CDC reports that severe and even fatal injuries would be cut by over 50%.
