Truck Smashes Disabled Car on Mass Turnpike

A Garelick Farms box truck going east on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brimfield entered the breakdown lane and struck a disabled car parked in the same lane, bursting into flames on Friday.

State police said the accident occurred at 2:40 pm on the 72-mile marker.

The impact pushed the car forward while the truck caught fire. According to Boston Herald reports, the car was able to get pushed out of the way before it also caught fire.

The truck driver was unhurt, but the driver in the parked car was injured and airlifted by a MedFlight helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with non-life-threatening injuries, NECN reported.

Police are investigating the reason why the truck moved into the breakdown lane.
