Norbert Bedard, 85, Hit and Killed by Car in Adams

Norbert Bedard, 85, of Adams, was hit by a car as he was crossing Park Street in downtown Adams last Friday.  Bedard was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It was reported that Bedard was not in a marked pedestrian crosswalk at the time he was struck.  The driver who hit Bedard has been identified as Jessica Bailot, 18, also of Adams.  Bailot was alone in the car when the accident occurred and was not injured.  No charges have been filed against her at this time.

State and local police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.  Authorities have stated that it does not appear that Bailot was speeding at the time of the crash.

This tragic fatality is the third death within the past two months of an elderly pedestrian being struck and killed by a car in Berkshire County.  On October 19 at about 6:30pm, 70-year-old Ralph Calamari was hit by a car in Pittsfield and died a month later from injuries that he suffered from the accident.  Two weeks ago, Carolyn Melle, 74, was hit and killed by a car around the same time also in Pittsfield.

Our thoughts are with all of these families during this difficult time.

Statistics on Pedestrian Fatalities
In 2008, senior citizens were involved in 15% of traffic deaths across the nation.  Seniors also accounted for 18% of deaths involving pedestrians.  In Massachusetts last year, there were 7 pedestrians aged 65 and older who were killed after being struck by a car on the roadway.

Woman Hit by Van Dies on East Boston Street

An unidentified woman was hit by a van as she was walking near 262 Bennington Street in East Boston yesterday afternoon just before 1:00pm.  The woman was declared dead at the scene of the accident by emergency personnel.

The force of the impact made the woman’s shopping cart crash into a snow bank.  Authorities are continuing to investigate how the fatal accident occurred and who the woman was.  It was reported that the driver of the van stopped after the collision.

Our thoughts are with the woman’s family at this difficult time.

This is the latest accident involving a pedestrian fatality over the past couple of weeks here in Massachusetts.

In 2009, there were nearly 4,100 pedestrians killed across the U.S. as a result of being struck by a car on the nation’s roadways.  That same year in Massachusetts, 48 pedestrians were killed after being hit by a motor vehicle.

UMass Professor Dies in Marion Crash

Ronald Herington, 75, of Marion, was killed on the evening of December 17 when his Acura became engulfed in flames after his vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant, hit rocks, and then struck trees on Point Road in Marion.  Local police had received a call just before 8:30pm that night about a car crash near the Kittansett Golf Club.  The caller told the dispatcher that there was a car on fire and that there was someone inside the burning car.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the crash and were able to put the car fire out.  Herington was pronounced dead at the scene after being taken from the burnt car.  An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.

Herington’s home in Marion had been damaged by a chimney fire back on October 9 of this year and the adjunct business professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth had been staying elsewhere while his roof and other necessary repairs were made.  The car crash is currently under investigation by local and state police as they try to uncover what may have caused the tragic crash.

Statistics on Older Drivers
Across the U.S. in 2008, there were about 183,000 older drivers who were injured in car accidents, which corresponded to 8% of all individuals who were hurt in accidents over the course of the year.  Older drivers accounted for 15% of all fatalities when it came to traffic-related accidents that same year.

How Buzzed Driving Can Wreck Your Holidays

If you’ve had one or two more drinks than you should have and get behind the wheel of your car, this can all too often be a recipe for a driving disaster.  To raise awareness about how even the slightest buzz makes a big difference on the roadways, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began the Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving campaign.

The campaign has its share of eye-catching posters and catchy sayings, which are accessible to anyone through the agency’s website to help spread the word on the dangers of buzzed driving.  In order to dissuade individuals from driving after they’ve been drinking, the NHTSA’s campaign has developed a 3-step approach:

1.    High-visibility law enforcement
2.    Enhanced prosecution and adjudication
3.    Medical screening and limited intervention for alcohol abuse problems

Underage individuals are at a high risk to drink and then drive, along with individuals under the age of 35 in general.  Repeat offenders of driving under the influence are also at an increased risk to drink and drive, as are high blood alcohol concentration (BAC) offenders.

Men are typically more likely to drive drunk than women.  In 2008 in Massachusetts, there were 116 drivers who had registered BAC levels of 0.08 or more who were in accidents where a fatality occurred.  95 of the 116 drivers were male.

For the rest of this holiday season we encourage all drivers on the roads to please not drink and drive.  The winter weather, just by itself, causes numerous accidents.  Adding alcohol to the mix could make your ride take a fatal turn.

Methuen Pair Seriously Injured in Early Morning Crash

Alain Ata, 26, and Tiffany Beeley, 25, both of Methuen, were seriously injured in a car crash on Prospect Street just before 1:00am this morning

When emergency personnel responded to the crash, they found the Honda Civic owned by Beeley crushed against a telephone pole.  Ata was rescued from the wrecked car with relative ease, but it took crews and the Jaws of Life two hours to remove Beeley from the vehicle.

Ata was transported to Lawrence General Hospital before being taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment of serious injuries.  Beeley was initially transported to Lawrence General, but was later driven in an ambulance to another Boston hospital due to weather conditions barring a helicopter flight.

Beeley remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the Boston hospital.

The telephone pole was damaged but the accident did not result in any power outages to the area.  Crews are working to replace the pole and repairing any wire damage.

Police are looking into the cause of the accident and at this point it is unknown whether or not the icy roads played a part in this serious accident.

Car Accident Statistics
In the U.S. last year, there were just over 400 fatal accidents that occurred Thursday mornings in between 12:00am and 3:00am.  Thankfully, the Methuen accident early this morning did not result in any fatalities.

Teenager Killed in Seekonk Hit and Run Accident

Jacob Mayo, 18, of Seekonk, was killed when he was hit by an oncoming car while walking in the breakdown lane on I-95 late last Friday night.  Police involved with the case have not made an arrest yet in the fatal accident case, but it has been reported that that they have recovered the car that officials believe struck and killed the teen.

Authorities are not releasing information on where the vehicle that hit Mayo was found or how they found it.  Additionally, police have not released the name of who the vehicle belongs to or who may be responsible for the fatal accident.  It is also unknown at this point why Mayo was walking in the breakdown lane of the highway that tragic night.

The deadly accident remains under investigation as state and local police continue to search for more answers.

More than 10% of all car accidents nationwide involve hit and runs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Two of the more common reasons why drivers leave the scene of an accident after they hit either a car or a pedestrian are because the driver may not have car insurance and, secondly, that the driver was operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs and attempts to avoid getting caught.

In the U.S. last year, just under 4,100 pedestrians were killed as a result of being struck by a car on the nation’s roadways.  In Massachusetts of the same year, there were 48 pedestrians killed after being hit by a motor vehicle.

Our sympathies go to the family of Jacob Mayo for their tragic loss.

Simin Arad Cancer Researcher Dies in Boston Pedestrian Accident

Simin Arad of Roxbury, a cancer researcher was the woman who was struck by a Longwood Medical area bus in Boston around 8:49 am yesterday.

Instead of being in her 30s as early news reports said, police reported that the woman was 50 years old.

She was fatally injured as she got struck by the shuttle while she was crossing at the intersection of Ruggles Street and Huntington Avenue. According to passenger accounts, the bus was passing through a green light at the intersection “when a female who was on the sidewalk just walked in front of the bus,” police records said.

Arad succumbed to her injuries at Brigham and Woman’s Hospital later that day. Arad was a researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The bus driver was also taken to a hospital. He has not been charged in connection to this tragic accident.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents Statistics
According to the NHTSA, 56 people died in pedestrian accidents after they were struck by a bus in 2009. In general, of the 4,092 pedestrians killed by motor vehicles in 2009, 343 died in morning accidents between 6 am and 9 am.

This latest pedestrian death is another somber reminder that we should all be extra careful, both as drivers and pedestrians, especially at intersections.

Liability Issues
In fatal pedestrian accidents, investigators will try to determine the cause. If they find that the driver is at fault, the driver could be held liable for the pedestrian's wrongful death, and the victim’s family could seek compensation to cover medical and funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.

In some cases, the accident may be caused by a dangerous road condition. In that case, the city or government agency responsible for the roadway could be held liable.

Dover Man in Serious Car Accident

Alexander Paganelli, 21, of Dover, was found in his wrecked Subaru last Thursday morning by his sister near their home on Miller Hill Road. Paganelli’s sister had just left home around 7:00am when she recognized her brother’s car, crashed against a tree.  Police have reported that it is not known when the collision occurred and how long Paganelli had been there.

Paganelli’s father, Paul, is the chief of emergency medicine at Milton Hospital and ran to the scene of the crash to assist his son.  Emergency personnel worked for over a half-hour to remove doors of the car to rescue Paganelli from the wreck.

Paganelli underwent brain surgery last Friday at a Boston hospital for internal injuries he sustained from the collision.

Police stated that drugs or alcohol have not been named as contributing factors in the serious crash.

Methuen Man Hurt in Lawrence Hit and Run

Michael Baglieri, 35, of Methuen, was injured on Merrimack Street in Lawrence this past Friday night when another vehicle suddenly pulled out of a parking lot and struck Baglieri’s car. The driver of the other car ran off after the impact and police are still searching for who is responsible. Baglieri sustained injuries to his back and leg, and his forehead was bleeding when police responded to the crash. Baglieri’s car, which belonged to his sister, was totaled from the force of the collision. He was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment.

It has been reported that the vehicle that hit Baglieri’s car, a Chevrolet Avalanche, is registered to Newburyport City Councilor Allison Heartquist.  Heartquist’s husband, Richard, allegedly had the car that evening in Lawrence to attend a Christmas party in the city. The driver of the Avalanche left the vehicle right where it was after the crash and ran from the scene, according to reports. There was no indication that the truck had been stolen that night. Lawrence police have not yet confirmed who was operating the Avalanche at the time the crash occurred.

Baglieri is recovering but is still sore from the accident. He works as a tree service company’s foreman and will be out of work until he fully recovers. Baglieri said of the crash that he could have been dead from the crash and his family reportedly could not believe that he survived it.

Hit and Run Statistics
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that more than 10 percent of all car crashes involve a driver who has fled the scene. A couple of the most common reasons why a driver may not stop after an accidents are that the driver does not have insurance or is operating under the influence of a drug or alcohol.

Under Massachusetts law, “whoever without stopping…after knowingly colliding with or otherwise causing injury to any other vehicle or property” can be punished by fines ranging from $20 to $200 and could face a prison sentence anywhere from two weeks to two years.

Baglieri has become yet another victim of hit and run accidents and stated that he believes the other driver, who police are working to identify, “should face the consequences."

Westwood Man Dies in Car Accident on Route 128

Matthew M. Cox, 33, of Westwood, died this past Wednesday afternoon when his Ford Explorer went off of Route 128, hit a guardrail and then rolled over in Needham. Cox was thrown from the vehicle and it was reported by police who responded to the scene that he was not wearing his seatbelt. He had been was driving south on the highway around 4:00pm when the SUV rollover accident occurred near Exit 19.

Cox was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later. No other vehicles were involved in the tragic accident. Two of the lanes were closed by police in order to clear the scene, causing heavy delays with the rush-hour traffic. The lanes were cleared a few hours later.

Seatbelt Statistics
In Massachusetts last year, 117 people who were not wearing seatbelts died in car accidents. Also last year in the Commonwealth, 51 people survived who were not wearing seatbelts in car accidents where there was a fatality reported, as opposed to 145 individuals who were wearing their seatbelts in similar types of accidents. Seatbelts are proven to reduce the risk of both death and severe injury to drivers and occupants in the event of a car accident by as much as 50 percent, according to the Click it or Ticket campaign managed by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in Massachusetts.

Next time you get in the car, even if it’s just a quick errand down the street, please take the extra time to put your seatbelt on. It may help to prevent a tragedy.

Alleged Drunk Driver who Struck, Killed Woman Out on Bail

Cynthia Ray, 30, had just left the Massachusetts State Police barracks off of Route 125 on Sunday afternoon, when Robert Bryant hit her with his pickup truck and then attempted to flee the scene before troopers caught up with him. The Haverhill woman died from her injuries later that night from this tragic drunk driving accident in Andover. Our sympathies go to the family of Cynthia Ray for their loss.

Bryant, 50, who was allegedly driving drunk when he struck Ray this past Sunday in Andover, was released yesterday on $10,000 bail. Prosecutors in the case attempted to keep the bail at $50,000 and to have Bryant comply with wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet in the event of posting bail. A Salem Superior Court judge yesterday ordered the bail to be reduced to $10,000 and lifted the order from Lawrence District Court that would have required Bryant, of Haverhill, to wear the monitoring bracelet. This is the latest development, and Bryant is to be arraigned in court on Jan 4.

Drunk Driving Fatality Statistics
Last year, over 4,000 pedestrian fatalities occurred in the United States. In 2008, impaired or drunk drivers killed approximately 12,000 people nationwide. This means that one pedestrian was killed every 45 minutes by an impaired or drunk driver on the road.

Ice and Alcohol - Factors in Fatal Weekend Crashes

Cynthia Ray was struck and killed by a drunken 50-year-old man, Robert Bryant, in front of the state police barracks in Andover. This accident involving the 30-year-old woman attracted extensive local media coverage in the last few days.

Fatal Drunk Driving Accident in Andover
Last weekend marked a series of tragic accidents in Massachusetts, some of which were caused by the inclement weather conditions, others by human errors in judgment resulting in drunken driving. The notorious DUI accident, mentioned above, happened on Sunday.

Ray, from the Bradford section of Haverhill (the same as Bryant), was on her way to her vehicle in front of the barracks on Route 125, when the pickup truck operated by Bryant struck her and continued to drive into her parked vehicle with her mother on the passenger seat.

Bryant was arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide under the influence of alcohol, while Ray was found unconscious on the road and rushed to a Boston hospital. She died Sunday night from her injuries sustained in the accident.

Fatal Two-Car Accident in Walpole
Ashley Valente died over the weekend following a 2-car accident on Route 95 in Walpole. The 20-year-old of Wilmington was traveling north on Rte 95 on Saturday when she rear-ended another vehicle which was also going northbound.

Valente’s vehicle went off the road, rolled over and struck a tree. The impact sent Valente, who was not wearing a seatbelt, flying from the vehicle. She suffered fatal injury and pronounced dead at the scene.

Kayla Tolentino of Boston, another 20-year-old woman, was traveling as a passenger, was injured in the crash and transported to a hospital.

The other driver, Russell Agrusa, 57, of Westwood, was not injured, and neither was her passenger, Paula Agrusa, 53, also of Westwood.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Fatal Pickup Truck Accident in Charles River
A man was found dead on Sunday in a bizarre accident after his pickup truck veered into Charles River in Millis. Robert Piccirillo, 52, of Medfield was found in his partially submerged truck by a pedestrian walking along Dover Road.

According to police, the truck was in the water for 6 hours at most.

Piccirillo is believed to have been alone in the truck.

The cause of this accident is not known as of yet.

Fatal Wrong-Way Accident on Interstate 91
Two drivers, Bridget Morawski, 29, of Enfield, and a 63-year-old man of Springfield, died in a fatal 2-car accident on I-91 in Longmeadow on Saturday, after going the wrong way on the highway.

Morawski was traveling northbound in the southbound lane on 91, when her vehicle collided with the car operated by the unnamed Springfield man. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not yet clear why Morawski was going the wrong way on 91.

Minor Auto Accidents in Waltham
A few other minor accidents occurred in Massachusetts in the last few days, mostly due to icy weather and slippery roads. Several motor vehicle accidents involved cars steering off the highway into the median along Route 20 in Waltham, police said.

Waltham residents were advised to stay at home on Monday after conditions grew so bad that icing caused 15 accidents, including a 6-car accident on Route 128. A tractor trailer accident was also reported on the rotary at Rt 20. Luckily, no one was seriously injured in the accidents.

Woman Dies in Accident on Route 95

Ashley Valente, of Wilmington, died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Route 95 in Walpole early this past Saturday.

It was reported that 20-year-old Valente and her passenger, 20-year-old Kayla Tolentino of Boston, were traveling north on 95 when their Toyota Camry hit the back of a Chrysler Pacifica in front of them.  After the impact, Valente lost control of the car and it veered off of the highway, rolling over and colliding with a tree.  Valente was reportedly not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected from the car.  She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Tolentino was injured and taken by ambulance to a local hospital for medical treatment.  The vehicle that had been struck by Valente’s car was being operated by 57-year-old Russell Agrusa of Westwood.  Agrusa had one passenger, 53-year-old Paula Agrusa, and both were uninjured in the accident.

Massachusetts State Police and reconstruction teams are currently investigating the cause of the tragic crash.

 Massachusetts Accident Statistics

Man Found Dead in Truck in Charles River

Robert Piccirillo, 52, was found dead this past Sunday afternoon inside of his pickup truck that was partly underwater in the Charles River in Millis.

Authorities reported that a pedestrian discovered the truck off of Dover Road on a walk at about 12:00pm.  There is currently an investigation into how Piccirillo’s truck ended up in the water.  It is believed that the truck had been in the river for approximately six hours before the passerby reported the finding to police.

An autopsy was scheduled for yesterday and that may help officials determine how Piccirillo died and ultimately what may have caused the accident.

It has been reported that investigators involved with this accident are determining whether or not the weather played a deciding factor in how Piccirillo and his truck were found in the Charles.  There were numerous car accidents Sunday morning, due to icing on the roadways in the early morning hours.

Massachusetts Car Accident Fatalities

Last year, there were a total of 334 deaths resulting from motor vehicle accidents in Massachusetts.  Of those deaths, approximately 30 percent involved a light truck.  Hopefully, more questions will be answered in the coming days about what happened in this tragic accident.

Personal Injury Settlements Gone Bad - Know Medical Lien Secrets Before It's Too Late!

A number of personal injury victims sign medical liens every year. The victims often times do not know the consequences that a lien can have on their personal injury settlement. Signing a medical lien could be a fatal mistake that can wreck your personal injury claim.

Once a medical lien is signed, you have obligated your personal injury lawyer to pay your expenses from your settlement. If your recovery is less than your medical bills, you will be obligated to pay the difference.

Over the years, it has become apparent to me that a client walks away with more money if they don't sign a medical lien. A lien offers no oversight as to the appropriateness of service. Doctors treating patients on a lien can over charge, over treat, or both.

Get Your Free Personal Injury Book
If you would like to learn more about medical liens and other fatal mistakes that can wreck your settlement, request your free personal injury accident book. Continue Treatment For Your Injuries
Whatever your case may be (lien or no lien) it is important to receive treatment and continue that treatment if necessary. Your recovery is critical to you and your family. Receiving treatment will help to ensure your injuries do not get worse after your accident.

Identity Released of Woman Struck, Killed by Drunk Driver

Authorities have released the identity of the 30-year-old woman who was hit by a drunk driver and who later died from her injuries yesterday.

Cynthia Anne Ray was struck by a pickup truck operated by 50-year-old Robert Bryant outside of the State Police barracks in Andover.  She had just left the building and was walking towards her car when she was struck by Bryant. Ray and Bryant are both from the Bradford section of Haverhill. Our sympathies go to the family of Cynthia Ray for their loss.

Bryant was in Lawrence District Court today, facing charges that included motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence.  Not guilty pleas were entered in response to the charges, with Bryant stating that he did not remember hitting the woman with his truck.

Fatal Drunk Driving Accident Statistics
Last year, there were over 4,000 pedestrians hit and killed by cars in the United States. In 2008, impaired or drunk drivers were responsible for the deaths of 12,000 people nationwide. This statistic translates to one individual being killed every 45 minutes by an impaired or drunk driver on the road.

Woman Struck, Killed by Drunk Driver

Yesterday afternoon, a 31-year-old woman from Bradford was struck by another Bradford resident, 50-year-old Robert Bryant, outside of the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Andover.  The woman, whose name has not been made public, succumbed to her injuries last night at a Boston hospital.

Bryant had been held overnight on $50,000 cash bail and is being arraigned in court today on motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence charges.

According to news reports, Bryant was allegedly driving drunk when he hit the woman with his truck in the parking lot as she was walking back to her car at the State Police barracks off of Route 125.  Bryant also hit the woman’s Toyota Highlander, with the woman’s mother inside the car in the passenger seat.  He then tried to drive away after hitting both the woman and her car.  State police caught up with Bryant just before the highway.  Bryant’s pickup truck had lost the right front tire from the impact of the accident, according to state police.

It was reported that the woman went to the Andover barracks around 3:00pm to pick up accident report paperwork on behalf of her husband, who had been in a car accident earlier in the day on Sunday.

After Bryant had hit the woman and her car, the woman’s mother ran to get help inside the barracks.  State police discovered the woman to be unconscious on the grass outside of the barracks and immediately administered first aid.  The woman was taken to an area hospital before being transported to a Boston hospital, where she later died.

This tragic accident remains under investigation by state police, with the Essex County District Attorney’s office also assisting in the investigation.

Methuen Man Dies in Route 110 Car Accident

Michael Croshaw, 55, of Methuen was killed yesterday afternoon when the car he was driving went off of the road and then collided with a tree.

At about 1:30pm, Croshaw was going east on Lowell Street (Route 110) in Methuen near the General Truck Center when his 2007 Honda Civic crashed.

The Methuen Police Department is continuing to look into the cause of the accident.  It was reported that there were no skid marks leading up to the tragic crash.  Authorities involved with the case stated that the autopsy will hopefully reveal if a health issue or emergency occurred that led to Croshaw leaving the roadway.

First responders used hydraulic gear to try and save Croshaw from the accident.  After he was taken from the car, he was transported to an area hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead.

How to Avoid a Holiday Disaster

As you are hurrying to get everything done for the holidays, chances are you will spend a lot of time in your car despite the cold, icy roads or snow storms. Last minute shopping errands or trying to get to someone’s house inspire people to brave the weather and rush everywhere this time of year.

Take extra care. Not all drivers will be paying enough attention to the road, and the road itself may be a tricky surface to drive on in winter. Also, as daylight shrinks in winter, be prepared for a lot more night-time driving. Add snow and ice to the mix and even the trustiest road can be treacherous.

How to avoid collisions? Be extra attentive to your surroundings. Watch out for other cars on the road, and be a defensive driver, even when you are in a hurry. Five minutes late will not be the end of the world. Not being able to brake on time could be.

Coming home from dinners and parties can be dangerous, too, especially when alcohol is involved. Don’t drink and drive. Always have a designated driver before the night starts. This way you won’t jeopardize your own life, as well as someone else’s.

Also, the holidays are a favorite time for car break-ins. To prevent someone from being tempted to break into your car, keep your presents out of sight (put them in your car's trunk), and park in an open and well-lit area.

With these safety tips in mind, your holidays will be on their way to being as merry and wonderful as they should be.

Have a Happy Holiday!

Texter Seriously Injured in Hyannis 2-Car Crash

Last Wednesday in Hyannis, a 21-year-old driver’s texting caused him to crash into another vehicle and has left him severely injured. William Hellwig of Marston Mills collided with a pickup truck where Yarmouth Road and Ferndoc Street intersect. First responders had initially requested a helicopter transport for Hellwig, but the weather conditions with the heavy rains would not allow for a flight to occur.

Hellwig’s vehicle crashed into the truck with such force that the truck was pushed into a furniture warehouse, causing damage to part of the building. The condition of the driver of the truck was not immediately available. Part of the street was shut down while police attempted to clear the accident scene.

The ban on texting while driving in Massachusetts went into effect recently on September 30.

Distracted Driving Statistics
Drivers under the age of 20 who are distracted behind the wheel are most likely to be involved in car accidents that result in a fatality. The next group that is most likely to be involved in fatal accidents is made up of distracted drivers who are aged 20 to 29. In addition, drivers who distract themselves with cell phones or other electronic hand-held devices are four times as likely to seriously injure themselves or others in car accidents.

Better Signs Urged After Man Seriously Injured in Wrong-Way 95 Crash

A 22-year-old Massachusetts man, Bruce A. Wall, of Hyde Park, suffered serious injury and underwent about 4 hours of surgery this weekend after his car was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 in North Stonington, CT.

The accident which happened early Saturday on I-95 (near Exit 93) involved Wall’s Oldsmobile sedan and an Audi operated by Ellen H. Noordzy, 21, of Exeter, RI, The Norwich Bulletin reported.

Wall was flown by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where the four-hour surgery was performed on Sunday. According to his father, the surgery to repair his broken bones and other crash-related injuries will leave him unable to walk for at least a year.

After seeing the Oldsmobile, Wall’s father said it’s a miracle his son is alive. "The car was crushed like an accordion," he said.

Wall’s passenger, Evan Williamson, 21, of Brewster, MA, was also injured in the accident. Williamson was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London and later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The wrong-way driver, Noordzy, was treated for chest pain and released, the article said.

The Day also reported on the accident, noting that Wall’s father, who hosts a Boston radio show, said he would press lawmakers to install better signs at the exit's on and off ramps.

Head-On Accident Statistics
According to the NHTSA, in 2009 there were 6,391 multi-vehicle fatal collisions in which motor vehicles were crashed at the front end.

Former Big Dig Boss Admits He Drove Drunk

Matthew Amorello, the former director of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, acknowledged last week that he was driving drunk this past August when he side-swiped two parked cars on a Haverhill street.  His driving license has been suspended for 45 days and he will be required to pay over $500 in fines.

While Amorello did not plead guilty to the charges he faces, it was reported that there is enough evidence against him for a jury to find him guilty.  Haverhill District Court judge Steven Abany ordered the case to be continued without a finding for a year.  If Amorello does not incur additional charges over the next year, the charges he currently faces will be dismissed by the judge.

Amorello drove his car into a couple of cars back in August in Haverhill and he continued to drive off after striking the vehicles, despite having lost one of his own tires in the process.

The former head of the Big Dig resigned from the highway and tunnel project in 2006 due to mounting pressure after part of the ceiling in a tunnel fell and landed on a car, resulting in the death of a woman from Boston.

Drunk Driving Statistics
In 2008, approximately 12,000 people died from drunk driving incidents nationwide.  While no one was seriously injured in the Amorello case, individuals who drink still get behind the wheel every day and endanger themselves and those around them.  There were 308 fatalities in 2009 in Massachusetts, with a total of 96 of those deaths resulting from drunk driving.

Teen Driver Hits Girl Crossing Andover Street for Bus

This past Monday morning, 17-year-old driver Melanie Nesteruk struck an unidentified 14-year-old girl who was crossing Andover Street in Andover to catch her 7:15am school bus. Nesteruk reportedly did not clear the frost off of her minivan’s windshield and this is what officials say is what led to her hitting the girl, who is listed in fair condition at a Boston area hospital. She had initially been listed in serious condition following the accident.

Nesteruk was given citations by Andover police for passing a school bus with flashing lights and for impeded operation of the vehicle. She allegedly told police that she did not see the school bus, the flashing lights, or the girl who was crossing the street towards the bus.

Here’s more information on this pedestrian accident in Massachusetts.
