Girl Killed in Natick Pike Rollover

Jennifer Ortiz, 24, of Framingham, lost control of Acura RSX she was driving Thursday afternoon when she swerved across all three lanes of traffic on Mass Pike East in Natick and into the breakdown lane. She then travelled down an embankment before the Acura rolled over several times.

The Metrowest Daily News reports that Ortiz had two passengers in the Acura with her, a 5-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl. The 6-year-old girl was declared dead at a Boston area hospital due to the severe injuries she suffered in the deadly car accident.

Ortiz and the 5-year-old girl suffered major injuries and were also taken to a Boston hospital for treatment.

Ortiz and the two girls were reportedly not wearing their seatbelts and, as a result, they were all ejected from the car during the accident.

Car Accident Statistics
Car accidents are the number one cause of deaths among individuals who are ages 5-34 in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC reports that wearing your seatbelt reduces your risk of serious injuries in a car crash by 50%. Children are at a much higher risk for suffering serious or even fatal injuries in a car accident if they are not restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seatbelt depending on what age the child is. Please ensure that you and all of your passengers have seatbelts on before putting the car into “drive.”

Two North Shore Teens Seriously Injured in Peabody Crash

Chad Mancini, 19, of Lynn and an unidentified teenage girl, 15, of Peabody sustained serious injuries in a Tuesday morning accident on the ramp leading from Route 1 S to I-95 N in Peabody. According to The Daily Item of Lynn, Mancini reportedly lost control of his Chevy Malibu while on the ramp when he collided into a guardrail, which spun the vehicle around, causing the car to hit the guardrail a second time, before it rolled over and landed on the side of the roadway.

Both teenagers were rushed to a Boston hospital with serious injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time. Massachusetts State Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have reported that excessive speed is most likely a contributing factor in the accident, which occurred around 7:30am. Both Mancini and the girl were reportedly not wearing their seatbelts when the crash took place. The ramp had to be shut down for purposes of the investigation and one of the lanes had reopened by 11:00am that morning.

Accidents Involving Rollovers
In a USA Today analysis report by industrial economist Joe Kimmel, sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) were found to have the highest chance of rolling over in an accident and were projected to roll over in 1 out of every 4 accidents these vehicles are involved in. Some models of SUVs are estimated to roll over in 1 out of every 2 accidents they are involved in. Passenger cars have about a 10% or less chance of rolling over in the event of a crash. Minivans were found to be very likely to roll over in an accident compared to most other passenger cars or light trucks.

Westwood Man Dies in Car Accident on Route 128

Matthew M. Cox, 33, of Westwood, died this past Wednesday afternoon when his Ford Explorer went off of Route 128, hit a guardrail and then rolled over in Needham. Cox was thrown from the vehicle and it was reported by police who responded to the scene that he was not wearing his seatbelt. He had been was driving south on the highway around 4:00pm when the SUV rollover accident occurred near Exit 19.

Cox was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later. No other vehicles were involved in the tragic accident. Two of the lanes were closed by police in order to clear the scene, causing heavy delays with the rush-hour traffic. The lanes were cleared a few hours later.

Seatbelt Statistics
In Massachusetts last year, 117 people who were not wearing seatbelts died in car accidents. Also last year in the Commonwealth, 51 people survived who were not wearing seatbelts in car accidents where there was a fatality reported, as opposed to 145 individuals who were wearing their seatbelts in similar types of accidents. Seatbelts are proven to reduce the risk of both death and severe injury to drivers and occupants in the event of a car accident by as much as 50 percent, according to the Click it or Ticket campaign managed by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in Massachusetts.

Next time you get in the car, even if it’s just a quick errand down the street, please take the extra time to put your seatbelt on. It may help to prevent a tragedy.

2 Men Die in Mass Pike Rollover Crash

Two 21-year-old men died and another man suffered serious injuries after an early-morning rollover accident on Sunday on the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) in Grafton, Massachusetts.

The single-vehicle accident, state police said, occurred around 12:45 a.m. when the driver, Guilherme Sobral, 21, of Worcester, lost control of the Nissan Maxima he was driving westbound on Rte 90, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Sobral’s passenger, Vinicius Martin Pereira, 21, of Framingham, was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Sobral himself suffered serious injury. He was transported by a medical helicopter to the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Another passenger, Raphael Monteiro, 21, of Natick, was seriously injured after he was ejected from the car. Monteiro was also transported to UMass Medical Center where he is being treated.

Car Accidents
According to the NHTSA, 364 people died in Massachusetts motor vehicle accidents in 2008 alone. Of them, 177 were drivers.

Causes and Liability Issues
While the cause of this fatal rollover accident is still being investigated by Massachusetts state police, we can note that many rollover crashes in the U.S. are caused by loss of control over the vehicle because of excessive speed, drunk driving, while negotiating a curve, due to weather conditions, vehicle design and more.
