Alleged Drunk Driver Crashes Car, Passenger Dies on the Riverway

Robinson Avendano, 38, of Dedham was allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol early this past Saturday morning at about 1:00 a.m. when his BMW collided with a tree and rolled over on the Riverway on Brookline Avenue, close to the Brookline and Boston line. The Boston Globe reported that the forceful impact killed one of Avendano’s passengers, Diana Sanchez, 26, of Dorchester. Avendano and another unidentified passenger were transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Sanchez was sitting in the front passenger seat and had been trapped in between the roof and the roadway as the vehicle rolled over. Authorities reported that she died at the scene of the accident and that her remains were removed by firefighters who responded to the crash.

The unnamed passenger reported to police that they had been drinking at a bar in Allston earlier that night and that Avendano was driving fast before he lost control of the BMW. Officials recovered empty bottles of alcoholic drinks as well as a receipt from the bar they had been that evening. Police on the scene reported that Avendano’s eyes were red and glassy and that they smelled alcohol on him.

Avendano was arraigned in his Boston hospital bed yesterday and entered pleas of not guilty in response to several charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of alcohol, and motor vehicle homicide. A Roxbury District Court judge set bail at $100,000 for Avendano. It is unknown at this time if Avendano has posted the bail amount or not.

Avendano is due back in court towards the end of November.
