Drunk Driver Allegedly Hit 4 Cars on Highway

Early this past Friday morning, 24-year-old Rony S. Santos-Cruz is alleged to have collided with four different cars on the highway running between Attleboro and Milton. After hitting the cars just around 5:00am, he ended up in the travel lane on Interstate 93 in Milton near a couple of the vehicles he had reportedly hit.

It was reported that Santos-Cruz acknowledged he was the driver of the Buick that hit the cars. His car showed extensive damage as a result of the collisions on the highway, including a tire that was blown and numerous dents. In addition, Santos-Cruz attempted and failed “multiple” field sobriety tests and had a reading of a blood alcohol level of 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Police are reported to have found beer bottle caps in the car driven by Santos-Cruz.

Upon his arrest, Santos-Cruz, of Quincy, was discovered to have three Massachusetts licenses that were all revoked. In the news article, it was reported that he had been granted a license for this year but had three other applications for a license rejected in 2004 and 2005.

He was arraigned and entered not guilty pleas in court on Friday on various charges, such as driving under the influence, driving with a revoked license, and leaving the scene of an accident that caused serious damage to property. Santos-Cruz posted the $1,000 bail and is expected back in Quincy District Court on December 27.

Driver in Brady Car Crash Loses License

An update was reported last week regarding the September car accident case that occurred in the Back Bay area of Boston, involving star quarterback for the New England Patriots, Tom Brady.

The driver who allegedly ran a red light and caused the crash between his minivan and Brady’s vehicle has had his driver’s license revoked for 60 days. Ludgero Rodrigues lost his license a few weeks ago on October 28 due to seven violations in the past three years where he was found to be more than 50 percent responsible.

Brady walked away unhurt in the accident while Rodrigues’ father, who was a passenger in the minivan, suffered serious injuries.

Rodrigues will be able to submit an application for his driver’s license to be reinstated next month on December 27 and, if approved, he would need to pay a $100 fee.

Airbag Saves Life of Choking Falmouth Driver

Last Monday afternoon, 53-year-old oil tank repairman Richard Silvia didn’t think much about snacking on raisins while he was driving along Route 28 in Falmouth—until he couldn’t breathe. Silvia, of East Falmouth, lost consciousness after choking on a yogurt-covered raisin, causing him to sideswipe two other cars in the opposite lane of travel. His work truck came to a final stop on an embankment.

The impact set off Silvia’s airbag and the force of the airbag on Silvia caused the raisin to dislodge and Silvia to then regain consciousness. A chain of events that he is certainly giving thanks for. He told reporters, “I thought I was going to die.” According to his fiancĂ©e, Silvia refuses to eat anything unless someone else is near him.

Silvia sustained a cut on his wrist from the accident and one of the other drivers is undergoing treatment for back injuries she suffered in the accident.

The Four Loko Phenomenon

With news story after news story in recent weeks, it’s pretty likely that most everyone knows about the alcohol-meets-caffeine drink Four Loko.

The beverage is a syrupy malt mixture that is comparable to consuming “three beers, a can of Red Bull and a shot of espresso.” While this hasn’t stopped people from drinking it, it’s been reported that Four Loko tastes like cough syrup. It’s also been referred to as “liquid cocaine” and a “blackout in a can,” packing a very potent 12 percent alcohol by volume punch. Both sales and concerns have sky-rocketed for Four Loko, negative press and all.

The Food and Drug Administration reportedly has plans to place a ban on drinks that contain alcohol and caffeine, with concerns stemming from what Four Loko actually can do to you once you consume it. Over 20 college students nationwide have been hospitalized as a result of drinking the beverage, which has led to some states already placing a ban on the product. Other states are still mulling the possibility of severely regulating or taking Four Loko off the shelves entirely.

The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission of Massachusetts will file an emergency ban next Monday as it seeks to completely restrict the sale of Four Loko and similar drinks. The new rule would prohibit the sale of any malt beverage that has alcohol, caffeine, herbal or chemical stimulants as additional ingredients. The makers of Four Loko, Phusion Projects, state on their website that they “take seriously our obligation to market our products only to adults 21 and over.”

Some stores on the North Shore in Massachusetts have already stopped selling Four Loko, due to the potential for underage drinking and driving. The concerns cited the most have been that Four Loko is essentially a very fast and cheap way (around $3 a can) to get drunk, which is music to the ears of an average teenager.

Washington is one of the states that has approved of a 120-day emergency ban on the caffeinated cocktail, with a potential permanent ban following. The state decided to take Four Loko off of store shelves after nine freshmen college students became “dangerously drunk,” with alcohol levels reaching up to a staggering 0.35 percent. Emergency personnel who responded to that scene reported it as “chaotic” and initially suspected drug overdoses.

Michigan is another state that has completely banned the sale of Four Loko, while colleges and universities across the U.S. are warning students on the dangers of drinking it. The city of Somerville in Massachusetts wants to follow in Michigan’s steps by just saying no to Four Loko and calling upon local vendors to stop selling the product.

We’ll find out next week how the Commonwealth’s attempt at the ban will go and until then, drink safely.

2 Men Die in Mass Pike Rollover Crash

Two 21-year-old men died and another man suffered serious injuries after an early-morning rollover accident on Sunday on the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) in Grafton, Massachusetts.

The single-vehicle accident, state police said, occurred around 12:45 a.m. when the driver, Guilherme Sobral, 21, of Worcester, lost control of the Nissan Maxima he was driving westbound on Rte 90, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Sobral’s passenger, Vinicius Martin Pereira, 21, of Framingham, was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Sobral himself suffered serious injury. He was transported by a medical helicopter to the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Another passenger, Raphael Monteiro, 21, of Natick, was seriously injured after he was ejected from the car. Monteiro was also transported to UMass Medical Center where he is being treated.

Car Accidents
According to the NHTSA, 364 people died in Massachusetts motor vehicle accidents in 2008 alone. Of them, 177 were drivers.

Causes and Liability Issues
While the cause of this fatal rollover accident is still being investigated by Massachusetts state police, we can note that many rollover crashes in the U.S. are caused by loss of control over the vehicle because of excessive speed, drunk driving, while negotiating a curve, due to weather conditions, vehicle design and more.

Methuen Man Struck, Seriously Injured by Car

On Monday night earlier this week, Isaias Rivera of Methuen was hit and critically injured by a car around 7:00pm on Woodland Street in Methuen. The car drove away right after hitting 20-year-old Rivera and the driver has yet to be identified.

Rivera sustained trauma to his head and internal organs as a result of being struck that rainy night. He was found unconscious on the street, but was breathing on his own. Emergency personnel responded and transported him to a local hospital before transferring him to a Boston area hospital for more appropriate treatment.

Methuen Police continue to search for the dark-colored SUV that struck Rivera. They urged the driver of the car to report to them, explaining that the weather and road conditions could have played a role in the accident. Driving off after hitting Rivera, however, was the opposite of what the driver should have done.

After Rivera had been struck, it was reported in the article that other drivers were pulling around his body on the road, even honking their horns in frustration. Residents in the immediate area did what they could to assist Rivera before help arrived.

Tractor-Trailer Truck Tips Over in Foxboro

This past Monday, 44-year-old Lewis Wade Jr. was guiding his tractor-trailer along the ramp from 495 South to 95 South in Foxboro when the truck tipped onto its side.

Wade, from Camden, New Jersey, was transported via helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment following the afternoon accident. He continues to be in the hospital for treatment and is currently listed in good condition.

Wade was transporting candles in his tractor-trailer truck, which were then loaded onto another truck.

87-year-old Driver Goes Through Guardrail, Into Water

Last Thursday morning, an 87-year-old unidentified woman sped through a guardrail and landed in a West Roxbury creek, which leads to the Charles River.

The woman was conscious following the 11:00am accident and was transported immediately to an area hospital for back pain.

It was reported that she was driving over 40 miles per hour when she hit the guardrail and ended up in the water. This took place at the Toyota Prime Motor Group dealership, where she was involved in another incident just prior to the run-in with the creek.

The facilities manager for the dealership, Joe Rose, stated that her car was hit by a black sedan in the dealership’s parking lot. Both cars had stopped at that point and the black sedan started to back up. The 87-year-old’s engine then revved loudly and accelerated quickly ahead as it sped through the lot, hitting many of the used cars in the dealer’s parking lot, before it hit the guardrail and descended towards the water. Once she was in the creek, the level of the water nearly covered the woman’s tires.

The driver of the black sedan was uninjured from the accident.
