How Many Massachusetts Motorists Are Not Wearing Seatbelts?

Car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers ages 15-19 and fatal injuries from crashes are the second most common cause of death among children who are ages 5-14.  Just over 20% of all fatalities resulting from car crashes in the U.S. were children, ranging in ages from newborn to 19, according to the World Health Organization.  The truth is, is that seat belts can help save lives, especially among children and adolescents, if used properly.  Many child safety seats and booster seats are not installed or even used correctly, which is why parents must ensure that the seats and buckles are set up right the first time.  Kids younger than 12 should always ride in the back seat for their safety, in the event airbags deployed in an accident.  Try to enforce a rule about not moving or even starting the car until everyone is buckled in safely.

In Massachusetts, it has been estimated that 30% of individuals in the Commonwealth do not buckle up when they get behind the wheel as a driver or even as a passenger, despite regular ad campaigns that raise awareness for both the legal and deadly consequences.  Teenage drivers are unfortunately renowned for not wearing seat belts, which all too often can end in tragedy for all involved.  Putting your seat belt on is simple but its effects can be the difference between life and death.  Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected out of the vehicle and keep the body as restrained as possible, with specific protection focused on the person’s neck, head, and spine.

State Trooper Hurt in I-93 Crash in Quincy

Brian Berry, 43, a Massachusetts State Trooper, was hurt in a crash that was reportedly caused by a drunk driver early Sunday morning on I-93 in Quincy, according to The Boston Globe.  Wayne Leduc, 40, of Milton was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he crashed into Berry’s cruiser that had been parked on I-93.  Berry had just pulled over a Cambridge driver in a separate incident.  The impact from Leduc’s vehicle forced the cruiser into Berry, who had been standing at the front of the cruiser, and resulted in injuries to Berry’s legs.  Berry is in stable condition currently at a Boston area hospital.  Leduc was promptly arrested and was in Quincy District Court to face a number of charges today.

Drunk Driving in Massachusetts
While the blood alcohol content (BAC) was not released in this case, having a BAC of .08 or over while driving in Massachusetts is illegal.  This amount is lower for drivers younger than 21 and for individuals who operate commercials trucks.  An OUI conviction for a driver in the Commonwealth could potentially result in fines anywhere from $500 to $5,000, as well as a prison sentence of two years or more.  Help make the roads safer in Massachusetts by including a designated driver in your evening plans.

Three Massachusetts Men Die in Friday’s Fatal Lynnfield, Marlborough Accidents

Victor Vargas, 42, of Lynn was killed this past Friday night in Lynnfield in the breakdown lane of Route 1 after he was hit by an SUV operated by William Halpin III, 25, of Melrose.  Vargas had been in the breakdown lane after his taxi was involved in a fender-bender with a Chevy Cobalt in front of him.  He and the driver of the Cobalt had been exchanging information when Halpin, who was allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, struck Vargas and then collided with the Cobalt, causing injury to a 6-year-old boy who was seated in the Cobalt.  The boy sustained serious injuries to his arm and shoulder and was rushed to a Boston area hospital.  According to The Boston Globe, Halpin had tossed marijuana from his SUV, but the drugs were later recovered at the scene of the deadly Massachusetts crash by police.  Halpin entered a not guilty plea today in Peabody District Court in answer to a charge of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of drugs.  He is currently held on $25,000 bail.

Earlier on Friday, Adam Richard, 34, of Hudson and Michael Kaminski, 60, of Oxford died in a 4-car accident in Marlborough on Route 85, according to MassLive.  Richard was reportedly declared dead at the scene of the accident and Kaminski succumbed to his injuries some time later at a local hospital.  According to preliminary reports, Richard lost control of the Chevy Malibu he was driving as he was traveling west on Route 85 and swerved into the opposite lane of travel heading east.  Richard initially struck a box truck driven by Richard Delisle, 62, of Palmer, before he collided head on with Kaminski’s Ford Taurus.  Delisle was not injured in the multiple-vehicle accident.  Robert Murner, 48, of Wilbraham, had been driving behind Kaminski and, when Kaminski was struck by Richard, Murner was not able to brake in time and struck Kaminski’s car from behind.  Murner and his passenger, Christine Murner, also 48 and of Wilbraham, were both uninjured.  Police are continuing to investigate what exactly lead up to the accident.
