Airbag Saves Life of Choking Falmouth Driver

Last Monday afternoon, 53-year-old oil tank repairman Richard Silvia didn’t think much about snacking on raisins while he was driving along Route 28 in Falmouth—until he couldn’t breathe. Silvia, of East Falmouth, lost consciousness after choking on a yogurt-covered raisin, causing him to sideswipe two other cars in the opposite lane of travel. His work truck came to a final stop on an embankment.

The impact set off Silvia’s airbag and the force of the airbag on Silvia caused the raisin to dislodge and Silvia to then regain consciousness. A chain of events that he is certainly giving thanks for. He told reporters, “I thought I was going to die.” According to his fiancée, Silvia refuses to eat anything unless someone else is near him.

Silvia sustained a cut on his wrist from the accident and one of the other drivers is undergoing treatment for back injuries she suffered in the accident.
