Better Signs Urged After Man Seriously Injured in Wrong-Way 95 Crash

A 22-year-old Massachusetts man, Bruce A. Wall, of Hyde Park, suffered serious injury and underwent about 4 hours of surgery this weekend after his car was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 in North Stonington, CT.

The accident which happened early Saturday on I-95 (near Exit 93) involved Wall’s Oldsmobile sedan and an Audi operated by Ellen H. Noordzy, 21, of Exeter, RI, The Norwich Bulletin reported.

Wall was flown by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where the four-hour surgery was performed on Sunday. According to his father, the surgery to repair his broken bones and other crash-related injuries will leave him unable to walk for at least a year.

After seeing the Oldsmobile, Wall’s father said it’s a miracle his son is alive. "The car was crushed like an accordion," he said.

Wall’s passenger, Evan Williamson, 21, of Brewster, MA, was also injured in the accident. Williamson was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London and later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The wrong-way driver, Noordzy, was treated for chest pain and released, the article said.

The Day also reported on the accident, noting that Wall’s father, who hosts a Boston radio show, said he would press lawmakers to install better signs at the exit's on and off ramps.
