Elderly Man, 84, Struck While Crossing New Bedford Street in Wheelchair

An 84-year-old man in a motorized wheelchair who has yet to be identified was struck by an oil truck Monday afternoon around 3:30pm while he was in a crosswalk where Purchase Street and Hillman Street intersect in New Bedford.

The unidentified Star Oil Company truck driver was traveling west down Hillman Street when he started to turn onto Purchase Street and then struck the man.  The elderly man was seriously injured and was transported to a local hospital before being taken to a Boston hospital for treatment.

The accident left the wheelchair ripped apart and the man’s shoes and jacket were found on the roadway as a result of the impact.  An investigation into the collision is underway by police, who issued a citation to the oil truck driver for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.  The immediate area was closed down for several hours as teams worked to reconstruct the accident site.
