2 Killed in Weekend Car Accidents in Massachusetts

Two people died and at least six others were seriously injured in two separate traffic accidents in Massachusetts over the weekend, according to police.

Backhoe Landing on 2000 Toyota Sienna on I-495

One of the fatal victims, Xjaoyun Jiang, 60, of Westford was a backseat passenger in a Toyota which was crushed on Friday when a backhoe rolled off a trailer being towed by a National Grid truck on I-495 and fell on top of it.

The driver, along with three of the passengers (two children and the woman who was killed), were trapped in the vehicle, which went about 20 feet down an embankment.

The accident happened in Southborough near Exit 23C, resulting in the senior’s death and the serious injuries in the three other Toyota occupants.

According to State Police, Xjaoyun Jiang was pronounced dead at the scene, while the children, a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, were rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center by ambulance. The driver, Yingzi Wang, 42, also of Westford, was flown to the same hospital.

There were no details on their conditions.

The driver of the truck towing a 2007 Case backhoe on a trailer, Jeffrey Fisher, 49, of Coventry, R.I., was not injured.

Van Accident Caused by a Disabled Driver

The other accident occurred in Ipswich, in which Daniel Callahan, 61, was killed when a van operated by a disabled driver struck and fatally injured him.

The same driver, losing control of the van, injured at least three other people. The victims were out on a company picnic with EBSCO Publishing Co., the Associated Press reported.

According to the authorities, among the victims was a 42-year-old woman, of Watertown, which was flown to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The other two injured people, a 31-year-old man from Topsfield and a man from Ipswich, were transported to local hospitals with not life-threatening injuries.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
