Icy Conditions Cause Up To 25 Accidents on MA, NH Highways

The Eagle Tribune reports that roughly 25 accidents occurred in the early morning hours today because of ice on Massachusetts and New Hampshire roadways.

By 6:00 a.m. this morning, a significant amount of spinouts had already taken place on I-495 in the area of Haverhill, Methuen, Merrimac, and Amesbury and additional spinouts were reported on I-95 from the New Hampshire border to Newburyport. Authorities have reported that many of these weather-related accidents resulted in serious injuries, including fractures.

Salting and sanding the highways began around 7:30 a.m. and the number of reported crashes decreased once the roads were treated. Massachusetts State Police reported that approximately 20 vehicles required towing from accident scenes.

From Manchester to Concord, NH, officials shut down a part of I-93 at about 7:00 a.m. due to the number of vehicles that had slid off the highway due to icing.

Tips for Winter Driving

With winter officially arriving tomorrow, here are some reminders for driving safely this season.

  • It’s important to make sure that your vehicle is in good working condition. Consider having a mechanic check your battery and antifreeze levels so that your car will be running smoothly in all kinds of wintry weather
  • It’s best to keep the gas tank about half full in order to avoid a freeze-up
  • Put an emergency kit together and keep it in your vehicle. The kit should include jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, extra blankets, signal flares, and water bottles
  • This is one of the most important reminders: If you absolutely have to drive somewhere, always give yourself additional driving time in bad weather no matter how far you plan on driving. With snow, sleet and all other kinds of precipitation (not to mention more vehicles on the roads for the holidays), traffic back-ups are to be expected around this time of year. Leaving earlier will allow you to take your time getting to your destination and to arrive safely
  • Distracted driving is dangerous no matter what, add snow into the mix and it’s even more dangerous. For your safety and for the safety of other drivers, refrain from using your cell, eating, reading, and any other distractions while you’re behind the wheel
