New Bedford Man Struck by Car, Lost Leg on Route 18

Mauricio Donez-Lopez, 32, of New Bedford was trying to push his Dodge Caravan down Route 18 in New Bedford Wednesday night after the van had run out of gasoline when he was struck by a car from behind him, causing him to lose his leg.

Donez-Lopez was in the right lane as he pushed his vehicle down the road to a gas station when Tania Pinto, 25, of Dartmouth hit him with her Nissan Altima, severing his leg.  According to police involved with the case, no charges have been filed against Pinto at the moment.

Donez-Lopez was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of his severe car accident injury and then to a Providence hospital for additional medical attention.  Pinto was taken to a local hospital as well.

The crash continues to be investigated by police.

Statistics on Pedestrian Accidents
There were approximately 4,100 pedestrians hit by cars in 2009 who died as a result of their injuries on U.S. roads.  In Massachusetts that same year, there were nearly 50 pedestrians who were hit and killed by cars on roadways in the Commonwealth.

Our thoughts and wishes are with Mr. Donez-Lopez for a speedy recovery from this tragic accident.
