Wareham Teenager Hit, Killed by Minivan in Route 195 Crash in Marion

Kourtney Vieira, 18, of Wareham, was hit and killed by a minivan last night on the eastbound side of Route 195 in Marion.  It was reported that Vieira had been walking in the right travel lane Sunday evening around 6:30pm when she was hit by a Honda Odyssey minivan, driven by 71-year-old David Benevides of Onset.

She was rushed to an area hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead some time later.  The car that Vieira had been in had reportedly run out of fuel on the roadway.  Officials reconstructing the accident site are investigating how the tragedy occurred and why Vieira had been walking in the travel lane at the time she was hit.

Our thoughts go out to the Vieira family at this incredibly difficult time.

There were approximately 4,100 pedestrians who were hit and killed by motor vehicles in 2009 across the United States.  In Massachusetts, 48 pedestrians were hit by motor vehicles and died as a result of their injuries that same year.
