Winchendon Man Killed in Snowmobile Accident

Richard Maynard III, 43, of Winchendon was discovered unresponsive early this past Saturday morning following an accident on his snowmobile off of New Boston Road in Winchendon.  Police responded to the scene a little after 2:00am Saturday and discovered Maynard with severe injuries.  Maynard was declared dead later that morning

Police involved with the case are continuing to investigate the deadly accident, but believe that Maynard went off of the trail on his snowmobile and then collided with a tree.  Winchendon police and the Massachusetts Environmental police are handling the case.

Snowmobiles are used by close to 3 million people across the U.S., with millions of snowmobilers across the globe.  On an annual basis, it is estimated that 200 deaths occur as a result of snowmobiling accidents, along with approximately 14,000 injuries.  There are a number of factors that made up these statistics, such as excessive speed, alcohol, and the lack of experience that a new snowmobiler may have.
