Woman Struck by MBTA Bus in Malden

An unidentified woman was struck by an MBTA bus yesterday morning just after 8:00am at the intersection of Commercial and Centre Street in Malden.

The unknown woman was taken to a Boston hospital for severe injuries, but she is expected to survive because the injuries are not considered life-threatening.  MBTA Police are currently investigating what led up to the bus hitting the woman.

Bus Accident Statistics
In 2009, there were 221 fatal bus crashes across the U.S.  The same year in Massachusetts, there was a single bus accident involving a fatality.

According to the MBTA, drivers of MBTA buses are in 2,000-2,500 accidents each year.  Of those, there are approximately 400-600 that are ruled as preventable accidents.  The MBTA handles about 4.5 million bus trips annually and since the year 2000, buses in the Commonwealth have been involved in 11 fatalities stemming from accidents.

Thankfully, in the Malden bus accident there were no fatalities and our thoughts are with the woman’s family at this time.
