Oil Truck Hit, Killed Elderly Man Running Across I-93 in Wilmington

Edward Ruff, 83, of Tewksbury died yesterday morning in a pedestrian accident after being struck by an oil truck on I-93 North in Wilmington as he was running across the highway for a hubcap. The Lowell Sun reports that at around 11:30am, Ruff parked his Nissan Altima in the breakdown lane on the highway and ran across the highway to pick up a hubcap, which did not belong to his car. The hubcap reportedly was on the median between the opposite lanes of travel. He then started to run back across the 93 to get to his car and crossed the left and middle lanes, but was struck by a Fred Fuller Oil Co. Inc. Mack truck in the right lane. The oil truck was being operated by Daniel Hoagland, 40, of Hudson, NH. It was reported that Ruff succumbed to his severe injuries at the accident scene. Officials are continuing to investigate the accident.
