Shrewsbury Car Crash Shuts Down Stretch of Route 9

Antonia Cappuccio, 61, of Jefferson was injured in a two-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon around 12:30pm when another driver, Mary Iannotti, 84, of Worcester crashed her Lincoln Continental into Cappuccio’s Subaru Forester on the eastbound side of Route 9 in Shrewsbury. Both vehicles then collided with the center barrier on the highway, with the Subaru rolling over and landing on its roof in one of the lanes of traffic and the Lincoln coming to a rest on the side of the roadway.

Route 9 eastbound was shut down to all traffic for about 2 hours while authorities conducted an investigation of the scene to determine the cause of the serious crash. Traffic was directed off Rte. 9 to side streets, causing delays.

The Shrewsbury Lantern reports that both parties were injured in the accident and that Iannotti had to be rescued from her Lincoln with the Jaws of Life by emergency workers. Cappuccio and two of her passengers, as well as Iannotti, were rushed to area hospitals for medical attention.

Rollover Crash Statistics
A car crash that involves a vehicle rolling over is one of the deadliest kinds of crashes out of all passenger vehicles. SUVs are at the highest risk of a rollover occurrence in a collision with roughly a 60% chance of rolling over. Passenger cars, such as sedans, face a 25% risk of rolling over in the event of an accident. Thankfully, there were no fatal injuries in this serious rollover accident yesterday.
