Weymouth Man Dies in Abington Crash

Joseph Sforza, 58, of Weymouth was killed Sunday morning in a two-car accident on Route 18 in Abington. Three other people were also injured in the crash, which occurred around 10 a.m. in front of 624 Bedford St., near the HarborOne bank.

According to police, Sforza was driving a 2004 Pontiac sedan when he collided head-on with a 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by Marco Herrera, 39, also of Weymouth. Eyewitnesses reported that Sforza was driving erratically.

A third vehicle swerved to avoid the collision, struck a sidewalk and blew a tire, police said.

Sforza suffered fatal injuries in the crash. He was initially trapped inside his vehicle, so firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate him from the Pontiac. A medical helicopter was supposed to take him to a Boston hospital, but Sforza went into cardiac arrest, and was brought to a South Shore Hospital instead.

Herrera and two passengers sustained minor injuries in the collision, and were taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.

The accident remains under investigation. So far, no charges have been filed.

Head-On Accidents in Massachusetts

While the exact cause of this accident remains to be determined, recent data from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that 441 fatal vehicle accidents occurred in Massachusetts in 2009, in which 280 people lost their lives. Of them, 151 were car occupants.

Head-on accidents can have devastating outcomes to the lives of the people involved. If they are not buckled up, the force of the impact can send people flying against the dashboard, or through a window. Serious injuries from head-on accidents often include head trauma, and spinal cord injuries.

The best way to prevent a head-on crash with another vehicle is to exercise extra caution and watch out for incoming traffic.
