3 Injured When Senior Driver Crashes Car into Melrose Drug Store

Three individuals sustained injuries yesterday afternoon when an unidentified elderly driver crashed into the Rite Aid on Main Street in Melrose.

The elderly man was attempting to park his car at the front of the pharmacy a little after 1:30pm when the vehicle went over the curb and collided with the storefront, crashing the car so that it was halfway into the store.

Several displays were knocked over and two female Rite Aid employees were injured as a result. The two employees and the driver were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries. Their conditions are currently unknown.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash and the driver’s vehicle has been impounded in order to see if mechanical failure played a role.

Elderly Driving Statistics
The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA) reports that roughly 187,000 drivers aged 65 and older were injured in car crashes in 2009 across the country. The NHTSA also reports that senior drivers comprised 16% of all car accident fatalities and about 10% of the total number of accident-related injuries that same year.
