Massachusetts Accidents in the News

Authorities responded to two deadly car accidents over the past week in Massachusetts and another serious collision that took place on a major highway. Police are continuing their investigations into these three accidents and have not pressed any charges against the drivers involved at this time.

2 Men Killed in West Springfield Head-On Crash
Israel Menendez, 20, of Springfield and Jose Ortiz, 20, of Greenfield were killed this past Sunday morning on Route 20 in West Springfield when the stolen car they were in collided head-on with another vehicle.

The Republican reports that Menendez was driving a stolen Honda Civic westbound when he crashed head-on with a Nissan Pathfinder driven by Mark Saracino, 27, of West Springfield. Saracino’s vehicle reportedly crossed the middle line and the two vehicles collided.

The Civic was reported stolen at some point before the 12:30 a.m. accident. Menendez had a second passenger in the Civic, Joel Menendez, 24, of Springfield, who sustained serious injuries in the fatal crash.

Police shut down the road for hours following the fatal crash while they investigated and reconstructed the scene. Officials have reported that alcohol and speed do not seem to have played a role in the deadly accident.

Joel Menendez, the brother of Israel, was in critical condition at the beginning of this week at a Springfield hospital. Saracino was seriously injured in the collision but his injuries were not reported to be life-threatening.

Pedestrian Killed by Car in Peabody
Maria Assuncao, 63, of Peabody was killed last Thursday morning after she was hit by a Ford pickup truck driven by Mark Ouellette, 47, of Salem near the intersection of Main and Washington Streets in Peabody.

The Salem News reported that Assuncao was crossing Main Street around 6:30 a.m. when she was struck by the pickup truck heading westbound on Main Street.

Police are continuing their investigation and have not reported if Assuncao was in a crosswalk at the time she was hit.

After the accident, Assuncao was transported to an area hospital, but was pronounced dead some time later. Police have not filed charges against Ouellette in this tragic accident.

Driver Injured in Route 95 Head-On Crash
The Newburyport News reports that an unidentified driver was driving north on Route 95 in Georgetown last Thursday evening when the driver’s Ford Escape veered onto the median and then crashed head-on with a tractor-trailer that was traveling on 95 South.

The unnamed driver of the Escape was seriously injured in the collision and was trapped in the vehicle until emergency workers responded to the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not identified and his condition is unknown.

Officials shut down one of the highway lanes to investigate the accident, which happened just after 7:00 p.m. Traffic was diverted to Exit 54 in Georgetown while police continued their investigation that evening.
