Jennifer Ortiz, 24, of Framingham, lost control of Acura RSX she was driving Thursday afternoon when she swerved across all three lanes of traffic on Mass Pike East in Natick and into the breakdown lane. She then travelled down an embankment before the Acura rolled over several times.
The Metrowest Daily News reports that Ortiz had two passengers in the Acura with her, a 5-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl. The 6-year-old girl was declared dead at a Boston area hospital due to the severe injuries she suffered in the deadly car accident.
Ortiz and the 5-year-old girl suffered major injuries and were also taken to a Boston hospital for treatment.
Ortiz and the two girls were reportedly not wearing their seatbelts and, as a result, they were all ejected from the car during the accident.
Car Accident Statistics
Car accidents are the number one cause of deaths among individuals who are ages 5-34 in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC reports that wearing your seatbelt reduces your risk of serious injuries in a car crash by 50%. Children are at a much higher risk for suffering serious or even fatal injuries in a car accident if they are not restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seatbelt depending on what age the child is. Please ensure that you and all of your passengers have seatbelts on before putting the car into “drive.”
