Norbert Bedard, 85, Hit and Killed by Car in Adams

Norbert Bedard, 85, of Adams, was hit by a car as he was crossing Park Street in downtown Adams last Friday.  Bedard was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It was reported that Bedard was not in a marked pedestrian crosswalk at the time he was struck.  The driver who hit Bedard has been identified as Jessica Bailot, 18, also of Adams.  Bailot was alone in the car when the accident occurred and was not injured.  No charges have been filed against her at this time.

State and local police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.  Authorities have stated that it does not appear that Bailot was speeding at the time of the crash. 

This tragic fatality is the third death within the past two months of an elderly pedestrian being struck and killed by a car in Berkshire County.  On October 19 at about 6:30pm, 70-year-old Ralph Calamari was hit by a car in Pittsfield and died a month later from injuries that he suffered from the accident.  Two weeks ago, Carolyn Melle, 74, was hit and killed by a car around the same time also in Pittsfield.

In 2008, senior citizens were involved in 15% of traffic deaths across the nation.  Seniors also accounted for 18% of deaths involving pedestrians.  In Massachusetts last year, there were 7 pedestrians aged 65 and older who were killed after being struck by a car on the roadway.
