Woman Hit by Van Dies on East Boston Street

An unidentified woman was hit by a van as she was walking near 262 Bennington Street in East Boston yesterday afternoon just before 1:00pm.  The woman was declared dead at the scene of the accident by emergency personnel.

The force of the impact made the woman’s shopping cart crash into a snow bank.  Authorities are continuing to investigate how the fatal accident occurred and who the woman was.  It was reported that the driver of the van stopped after the collision.

Our thoughts are with the woman’s family at this difficult time.

This is the latest accident involving a pedestrian fatality over the past couple of weeks here in Massachusetts.

In 2009, there were nearly 4,100 pedestrians killed across the U.S. as a result of being struck by a car on the nation’s roadways.  That same year in Massachusetts, 48 pedestrians were killed after being hit by a motor vehicle.
