Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash Keeps Chelsea Driver Held on $100,000 Bail

Julio Vaquerano of Revere died in a fatal hit-and-run accident around 10:00pm on December 14, 2010 in Chelsea when he was hit by Luis Gabriel Escalante, 22, of Chelsea, after Escalante struck Vaquerano with his Dodge Neon and then drove off.

Escalante is being held on $100,000 bail after his arraignment last Thursday where he faced serious charges of felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Vaquerano was transported to a Boston area hospital once police were called to the scene, but he was pronounced dead upon his arrival at the hospital.  Escalante will return to court at the end of February.

Statistics on Hit-and-Run Accidents
Roughly 10% of motor vehicle accidents that happen across the country every year are hit-and-run crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Individuals who drive away from the accident that they caused may not carry car insurance.  Another common explanation is that trying to “get away with it” may be more appealing to some drivers than facing the damage that they caused or life they took.  Drivers responsible for hit-and-run accidents may also be impaired in some way and operating under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.
