Methuen Man Mark Torres Killed in Snowmobile Accident in Massachusetts

Mark Torres, 44, of Methuen, Massachusetts died in a snowmobile rollover accident close to Lowell Street in Methuen last Friday. Officials say the accident occurred as he was attempting to climb up a steep embankment along Merrimack River when his snowmobile rolled over on top of him causing fatal injuries.

Torres was alone on the snowmobile at the time of the accident. His wife told police that he had left around 5:00 pm to go for a ride, but never returned. She rounded up some friends and neighbors and went to look for him. Around 8:00 pm, a friend discovered Torres and called 911.

He was rushed to a local hospital, but at this point it was too late to do anything for him. Torres was pronounced dead at Lawrence General.

While this accident remains under police investigation, we offer our sincerest sympathies to his family.

Torres was known as a responsible rider, and he was wearing his helmet and gloves at the time of the accident.

In snowmobile accidents, many factors may be involved to cause a rollover. Often times, it is driver inexperience, lapse in judgment, operating under the influence, or problems with the vehicle itself, among others.

Last year, 38 snowmobiles were involved in fatal accidents in the United States, while last winter (2009-2010), in Massachusetts alone there were 26 snowmobile accidents, one of which resulted in a fatality.

This year is looking to be more devastating, since this is the second fatality since the beginning of January. The first snowmobile accident fatality was Richard A. Maynard III, who was killed as a result of a Winchendon accident on January 15.
