MBTA Train Hit, Killed Unnamed Man in Gloucester

An unnamed man was struck and killed by an MBTA commuter line train Wednesday evening around 7:30pm as the train went through Babson Reservoir in Gloucester, according to an article in The Gloucester Times.  Officials were unable to properly identify the man’s body following the accident but are currently working on determining the victim’s identification.  If authorities investigating the tragic crash discover that the accident was the result of a train operator's negligence, the victim’s family could pursue a wrongful death lawsuit

Police investigating the case were at the accident scene for over three hours last night.  The passengers on the commuter train that struck the man were taken by bus to Rockport and passengers who were expecting later trains were also shuttled by bus from the Gloucester station to Rockport directly.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in the U.S.
Approximately 4,100 pedestrians died in fatal crashes across the country in 2009, as reported by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  Most of these accidents involving pedestrians  took place between 6:00pm and 8:59pm in the evening, with just over 1,000 fatal accidents occurring within that timeframe over the course of the year.  That same year, there were 48 pedestrian accident deaths in Massachusetts and the majority of pedestrian fatalities in Massachusetts occurred between 6:00am and 8:59am in the morning.
