2 People Die in Andover OUI Accident

Shayna Fernandez, 21, of Lawrence will be in Lawrence District Court today to face a number of charges connected to the fatal drunk driving accident that she caused this past Saturday morning just before 7:00am on I-93 North in Andover.

Fernandez was allegedly driving drunk and speeding in the left lane of I-93 when her Acura RSX crashed into a Chevrolet Blazer operated by Francis O’Hanley, 62, of Saugus. The impact made Fernandez drive off of the highway, go onto the median, then re-enter the highway. Upon driving back onto the highway, Fernandez collided with the Blazer again, forcing the Blazer to roll over and ultimately come to a stop on the center median.

The Eagle Tribune has reported that O’Hanley died from his serious injuries from the crash at a local hospital that same day. One of O’Hanley’s two passengers in the Blazer, Joseph Coppola, 57, of Malden also died on Saturday at a Boston hospital from his serious injuries. The second passenger has been identified as Timothy O’Hanley, 25, of Saugus, who remains hospitalized. His condition is currently unknown at this time.

Fernandez did not sustain any injuries in the accident. She is set to be arraigned today for driving under the influence of alcohol, excessive speed, and potential motor vehicle homicide for the tragic deaths of both O’Hanley and Coppola. She could also face charges of causing serious bodily injury to Timothy O’Hanley. Police continue to investigate the deadly crash and may be adding more charges against Fernandez.
